Citizen Wolf x Dempstah

Citizen Wolf is a sustainable Aussie fashion label creating made to order, custom–fit apparel.
Their dedicated team have streamlined the manufacture of made–to–measure clothing from their factory in Sydney's Inner West; following a business ethos which prioritises bespoke quality and hyper localism over profit-driven mass production.
Like any fashion label that manufactures their own cut and sewn apparel, fabric offcuts and scraps are an inevitable byproduct of Citizen Wolf's production process.
Although they already go above and beyond to upcycle their scrap fabric into new products– including modern patchwork tote bags and jersey scarves– we've focused on helping them recycle what remains into spun yarn.

Fortunately, Citizen Wolf's commitment to using high quality jerseys made from only natural fibre (i.e. fine merino wool and organic cotton) means their production scraps are ideal for mechanical fibre recovery.
Beyond that, the diversity of fabric colours allowed us to create five distinct yarn colourways by strategically sorting scraps based on their existing hue; no bleaching, dyeing or chemical colourants necessary.
To create a strong but soft yarn, suitable for the widest range of applications, we blended Citizen Wolf's recovered fibres with 45% virgin Australian merino wool– sourced from a collection of small, independent farms around Australia that all produce the same 19.5 micron count quality.

The resulting yarn has a unique texture and touch; combining the dry, crisp handle of recycled cotton with the smooth and lofty feel of both recycled and virgin wool.

To learn more about how our recycling process works, check out our about page.

Hook Choice

Recovered fibres are generally shorter and less elastic than virgin fibres, so to avoid a dense and rigid yarn we try not to twist the yarn plies too tightly as we spin them.
Because of this soft twist, the plies can separate during use. This is less likely to affect knitters, but more common amongst right–handed crocheters, who naturally work against the yarn‘s Z–twist direction.

To alleviate this, we recommend using a Clover crochet hook– with their tapering crown and broad, blunt lips. Any hook with a sharper crown or lip is more likely to harpoon or snag the yarn and divide the plies, while an especially round crown can make it trickier to cleanly dive through stitches.

Washing

Fabrics can be washed by hand, or in a washing machine on a delicate or handwash cycle, with cold water only.
The virgin merino wool in our yarn has been very minimally processed (as opposed to wool that has been carbonised/acid bathed to scour the scales from the fibres) and it will felt if heat, moisture and friction are applied.

Fabrics may compress while being washed, but shouldn’t shrink, so can be returned to their original shape by blocking.

Blooming

Another characteristic of the wool content is that it will cause the yarn to bloom once washed. Blooming is when the yarn appears fuzzier and plumper after washing.

This is a cosmetic change only, and although your stitch definition may not look as sharp, there should be no change to your stitch gauge or project size, provided you block your work appropriately after washing.
